Exe Valley Caravan Site

Nr Dulverton, Somerset

Exe Valley Caravan Site is the only 5-star adults only site in the Exmoor National Park.

The site occupies a peaceful setting in a wooded valley set alongside the sparkling River Exe. There are beautiful views, an abundance of wildlife and many footpaths leading to the moors, woodlands and rivers. It is an ideal location for camping and country loving folk. The carefully maintained campsite covers 4 acres of level grass between the River Exe and our own mill stream. 47 pitches have electric and TV hook-ups, and there are 18 hard standings.

Every pitch has ample space and enjoys its own section of the bank beside the fast flowing clear water of the river or the mill stream.

A further acre of our land provides for a leisurely stroll up to our weir, and an area where dogs may run free and splash in the river.

The owners live on site in Bridgetown Mill, which dates back to the 17th Century. Once a grist mill, it was used for milling flour during the Second World War. The building is in good repair and most of the Mill machinery is in working order. The Mill is listed as being the largest on Exmoor, and is usually open for campers to go inside on Sunday mornings. The site also includes the old village forge which is used for storage.

Our walks and drives from the site provide interesting excursions including Red Deer and Exmoor ponies roaming over heather-clad moors, crystal clear rivers or streams full of wild trout. Over 50 varieties of birds have been seen on the campsite.

We assure you of a warm welcome when you arrive and provide you with a ‘welcome drink’ if you arrive during office hours. We also will supply you with a map of the site together with a general information sheet.

At Exe Valley we try to anticipate the needs of our campers, and apart from the washing machines and payphone, there are no extra costs. Situated in a National Park, there are restrictions upon buildings and appearance which makes the Park very special and beautiful.

The showers are the old milking parlour! Modern, spacious and powerful, heated in the colder weather, and with a hairdryer and washing cubicles for the ladies.

The toilets are found in the old machine shop! Modern, panelled walls, and heated in the colder weather

The disabled facilities comprise of an all-in-one toilet, shower (wet room), and wash basin with access ramps.

The laundry room and dishwashing room are the old boat shed! It also contains an ironing board with iron, microwave and freezer block fridge.

The well-stocked site shop is not a supermarket but contains a surprising variety of local food and things that you may need including alcohol and camping supplies. We also supply replacement cylinders for Calor Gas and Camping Gaz.

Fly fishing is free and we have 600 yards of the bank of the River Exe, where campers may compete with the kingfishers, herons and otters to catch brown trout and grayling. We recommend a short rod.

Our information room contains folders on local walks, local pubs, bus timetables, fishing, caravan repairs etc. We also have a wide variety of leaflets and local information, together with a small exchange library.

47 of our 50 pitches have electric hook-up available. There is 10 amps electric, and the TV is digital with some 24 channels and 6 radio stations. We can lend you a TV cable to extend from our box to your TV.

Exe Valley Caravan Site also has a motorhome service point, a public telephone (if you are unable to use wifi calling etc.), free high speed wifi and a warm dog wash.

When staying at Exe Valley Caravan Site you will find unspoilt villages, National Trust properties and beautiful gardens. The scenic North Devon Coast and Lorna Doone Valley are also within easy reach.

Surrounding the campsite, which is within the National Park, you have the beauty of Exmoor. Several walks start from the campsite, take a guided safari trip on the moors, or watch a game of cricket at the beautiful Bridgetown Cricket Ground.

The mystical Tarr Steps on the River Barle is within walking distance or just a short drive away.

If our river fly fishing is not enough fishing is also available at one of the local fish farms or from Wimbleball or Clatworthy resevoirs.

Dulverton and Dunster are two villages close by, which support a variety of high quality shops in beautiful old market settings. They both enjoy good tearooms and restaurants with Dulverton positioned by the River Barle, and Dunster lying beside its famous castle maintained by the National Trust.

The seaside town of Minehead is a bustling town with a small harbour and interesting shops. It is also home to the West Somerset Railway which runs restored trains the 20 miles between Bishops Lydeard (near Taunton) and Minehead. The coastal scenery is stunning and a return trip makes a memorable day out.

Beyond Minehead you can travel through the picturesque villages of Selworthy and Porlock (with its beautiful weir) – both are well worth a visit – and then on to Lynmouth and Lynton. You could even take the open-top Exmoor Coaster bus from Doniford to Lynmouth.

Further along the coast are the beaches of Croyde, Woolacombe and Saunton – all voted Best Beaches and home to surfing, swimming, sand yachting or just paddling.

National Trust properties close by include Dunster Castle, Arlington Court and Knightshayes Court, whilst English Heritage owns the thirteenth century cloister buildings at Cleeve Abbey.
